One Life

This video was shot by myself, Alan Shenton of Z&G, and a friend Wesley Vinay early one morning in a forest in Barberton. We only had about 3 hours shooting time and zero budget. I edited it using Final Cut. Hope you enjoy.
Today I had a really great experience – myself and a couple of new mates went on one of the first bicycle tours of Alexandra (‘Alex’) township in Johannesburg! I’ve been into Soweto a few times, as well as other townships around SA, but going through Alex on a bicycle was totally different and a great way to experience it all. Our tour guide was a young entrepreneur named Jeff. After being mentored by a tour guide in Soweto who does a similar bicycle tour, Jeff decided to start up his own operation from his home in Alex. A friend of a friend named Dustin (who coaches Jeff hockey) got a group of us together to be the first to experience the tour – I went along with my camera to document the trip.
Although it’s starting small and Jeff is mainly borrowing bicycles until he receives enough funds to buy his own, the tour is bound to become a success, especially for white South Africans who are looking to get a different view on the township life as opposed to the one they see only through the windows of their vehicles or read about in the papers. Once the I’ve processed all the photos, myself and a good friend Leith are going to be building Jeff a website for his tour which will hopefully open up his client base to not only South Africans, but to travelers from abroad. When it’s all done I’ll post a link on the blog.
Here’s one of my favourites from the trip… the rest are coming soon! (I wasn’t sure whether this was a goat’s, sheep’s of calf’s head)
Shadowclub are a great new blues-rock ‘n roll band from Jozi… they’re signed to the same label as us (Just Music) and I attended their media launch last night. Here are a few pics I shot. *The launch took place at the awesome new Openroom Studios in Greenside!
So yes, technically this is a photo blog but with all this new technology flying around and HD capable cameras being so readily available it’s hard not to get into some video! I shot this on my Canon 5D and edited it in Final Cut Pro… my first attempt since my varsity days to shoot and edit video. Thanks again to the beautiful Emma for being my loyal subject. The music is something I recorded at my home studio using Pro Tools
